They specialise in constructing timber framed buildings often used by schools and educational establishments. The great advantage of this form of construction is its speed and the fact that as most of the work is done offsite disruption is kept to a minimum. Not only that, the timber is all sourced from certified sustainable forests, wood is an eco-friendly material and this method of construction produces less emissions than the conventional building methods.

Modular Classrooms

Timber Frame Buildings

Apache Admin

So, there I was, freshly moved my co-located server from one provider to a less expensive one. Hardware was different, too - dual core Xeon instead of dual Xeon processors. But more RAM, more disk...

Of course I was interested to see how the new hardware handled its load. My basic feeling was that it should have found it very easy. After all it was not that many years ago that a 450MHz Athlon managed in a very similar role. So, I was keeping an eye on uptime and the Load Average figures.

Imagine my surprise at discovering Load averages of 3+ at times, sometimes even as high as 6. I could feel beads of perspiration forming on my forehead and a dread realisation dawning that I might have made a bad move. The httpd processes were taking around 12% CPU utilisation each! Top showed 30% idle at the best of times

As this is an out the box Centos 5.2 Apache, I started to comment out as many of the LoadModule statements in the httpd.conf file as possible. But this made little or no difference. It was then that I discovered server-status. This little beauty helped my track down the high loading to one badly configured domain using typo3. The 404 error handler had been set up to point to a now non-existing page which would trigger another 404 error pointing to the non-page which would trigger a 404 error... you get the idea!

Problem fixed and my Load Average figure is 0.10, 0.11, 0.09

Moral of this story is server-status and elinks. You can configure it so it's only accessible via localhost. I love it.
